Genesis 39:2-3 2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

Genesis 42:28 28 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?

There is a great contrast between Joseph and his brothers.  Genesis 39.2-3 notes that God was with Joseph in a way that others could see.  Joseph exhibited godly integrity throughout all of his adversities to the point that those that were around him could see God in him and in his work.

On the other hand Joseph’s brother’s having been in Egypt and now on their way home, in but a few moments of adversity, discover their money in their bag and say “What is this that God has done to us?” (Gen 42.28)  In a slight moment of trial they proved that they held no real integrity toward God.

Hence the contrast challenges us to consider, who is God to us?  Is God the sovereign over all things who can be trusted in every possible circumstance?  Or is God the villain of our lives, robbing us of good, afflicting our lives, and robbing us of our luxuries?  I see in Joseph the godly integrity I desire for myself so that I might say that I count it all joy when I fall into divers temptations, because my Heavenly Father is truly at work in my life (James 1.2-3).

Who are you like?  Who do you want to be like?
